Linfen sits in southwest Shanxi, with its municipal seat in Yaodu District and a wider prefecture made up of 1 district, 14 counties and 2 county-level cities. It was historically known as Pingyang, a name you’ll still see in museums, hotels and local branding. Treat the city as a base for spread-out culture and surroundings trips: Yao Temple and Huamen are just south of the centre, Hukou Waterfall is out in Ji County on the Yellow River, and Hongdong’s migration-history sites sit north of town.
