About Cologne
Cologne is a Rhine city of about one million residents and around six million visitors a year, with the cathedral, Old Town, Romanesque churches and Rhine-side walk to Rheinauhafen forming the classic first-visit route. You get a strong contrast here: a UNESCO-listed cathedral begun in 1248 and completed in 1880, traditional brewery culture around the Altstadt, and creative western neighbourhoods such as the Belgian Quarter and Ehrenfeld. It is usually a moderate-price German city break, but hotel rates can rise sharply around trade fairs, Carnival and Christmas markets.
