Things we wish we'd known

1. Choose your base by itinerary, not by the word Cebu. Stay in IT Park or Ayala for city convenience, Mactan for resorts and early flights, and Moalboal if the sardine run is the priority.
2. Do downtown heritage early in the morning. Magellan’s Cross, the Basilica, Fort San Pedro, Colon and Carbon are close enough to combine, but the area becomes hotter and busier later.
3. Don’t assume Mactan means a cheap public beach holiday. The best Mactan experience is often resort-based, while budget water-focused travellers may get better value in Moalboal.
4. Build traffic buffers into airport days, especially if you’re crossing between Cebu City and Mactan.
5. For Kawasan canyoneering, book a guided operator with safety measures, equipment and guide-led canyoning.
