Why stay near Hoover Dam
Hoover Dam spans Black Canyon on the Colorado River, about 35 miles southeast of the Las Vegas Strip. People come to walk the crest, peer straight down into the canyon, and, if they choose, go inside to see how hydroelectric power is generated. What sets it apart is the physical scale you feel underfoot: the dam rises 726 feet from bedrock to crest, and the concrete base thickens to 660 feet. It’s an easy half‑day trip from Las Vegas, or a quieter overnight if you stay nearby in Boulder City.
About Hoover Dam
Construction of Hoover Dam ran from 1931 to 1936, authorized by the Boulder Canyon Project Act of 1928 during the Great Depression. The project controlled flooding on the Colorado River, created Lake Mead, and delivered reliable water and electricity to a rapidly growing Southwest. The dam was dedicated on September 30, 1935, and began generating power on September 11, 1936. A purpose‑built town, Boulder City, was established to house workers and their families during construction. Today the dam is still a working facility operated by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, producing hydroelectric power and managing water and flood control for Nevada, Arizona, and California. Visitors can walk across the crest for free, explore exhibits in the Visitor Center, or take guided tours that descend by elevator into original tunnels and the Nevada Powerhouse to see the generators up close.
