About Museum of Modern Art
MoMA was established in 1929 by a group of trustees led by Lillie P. Bliss, Mary Quinn Sullivan and Abby Aldrich Rockefeller. Its founding director was Alfred H. Barr Jr. After several temporary locations, the museum opened its Midtown building in 1939. Its history includes expansions in the 1950s and 1960s by Philip Johnson, a major renovation by Cesar Pelli in 1984, and the later Yoshio Taniguchi project, whose museum galleries reopened in 2004 and education building opened in 2006.
The museum describes a collection of approximately 200,000 works spanning several forms of visual expression. Its library, archives, film programmes and educational activities extend beyond the gallery displays. Works are shown in rotating installations, so the presence of an artist in the collection does not guarantee that a particular work will be on display during your visit.
