为什么住在Gitanae附近
Gitanae is the remains of a fortified ancient city of Epirus, spread across a low plain beside the Kalamas (ancient Thyamis) River in today’s Thesprotia region. Travellers usually reach it from Corfu, but it’s important to know the site is on mainland Greece, not the island. People come to Gitanae for its well-preserved Hellenistic theatre and for the sheer scale of the place: long stretches of city walls, open public spaces, and a visible street grid laid out in the landscape. What makes it distinctive is its political role. This wasn’t a ceremonial backwater, but a working civic centre where assemblies of the Epirote League met, including just before Rome conquered Epirus in 168 BC.
关于Gitanae
Gitanae was founded in the late 4th century BC, around 336–330 BC, and developed into the seat of the Koinon, the federal league of the Thesprotians, taking over that role from nearby Elea. The city was carefully planned on a Hippodamian grid, with straight streets, defined public areas, and strong fortification walls enclosing the settlement. Today, the most prominent monument is the limestone theatre, built in the mid-3rd century BC and oriented toward the river plain. It could hold several thousand people and was used for theatrical performances but also for political assemblies. Archaeological finds, including seals with theatrical masks, underline how closely performance and civic life were linked here. Gitanae was abandoned by the end of the 1st century BC, after Octavian founded Nicopolis and drew political power away from the area. Visitors now see exposed walls, public buildings, and extensive theatre seating across a large, walkable site.

怎么到那里
From Corfu, take a ferry to Igoumenitsa, which takes roughly 1 to 1.5 hours depending on the route. From Igoumenitsa, Gitanae lies about 16 km northeast, reached by driving toward Sagiada and turning off after the Kalamas River dam. The site entrance is around 1 km from the turn-off. Public transport is limited, so a car is the realistic option.
值得先知道的事
- Bring water, a hat, and sun protection, as the site is open and has little shade.
- Wear sturdy walking shoes because paths are uneven, particularly around the theatre and city walls.
- Check opening days carefully before you go, as schedules differ between summer and winter seasons.
- Plan to spend about 60–90 minutes; the site is large, but signage is limited and the experience is mostly walking.
- Combine Gitanae with another Epirus site, as it works best as part of a mainland day trip rather than a single-stop journey.

Gitanae附近住哪里好
If visiting Gitanae is a priority, staying on the mainland makes the trip far easier than basing yourself on Corfu. Igoumenitsa is the most practical choice, thanks to ferry connections, dining options, and the shortest drive to the site. Travellers looking for a quieter stay can stay near Filiates or Sagiada, which puts you closer to Gitanae but with fewer services. Corfu Town only makes sense if you’re prepared for a long day trip involving ferry schedules and an early start.
