Aptera is one of western Crete’s longest‑lived cities. Its name appears on Mycenaean Linear B tablets from Knossos in the 14th–13th century BC, showing it was established well before the classical period. The city reached real power in the Hellenistic era (4th–3rd centuries BC), when it controlled shipping in Souda Bay and minted its own coins. After the Roman conquest in 67 BC, Aptera wasn’t destroyed. Instead, Roman investment reshaped it, adding large‑scale infrastructure to support a sizeable population through dry summers. What survives today reflects that phase: monumental barrel‑vaulted cisterns, baths, public buildings, and an organised street layout. The city declined in late antiquity and was eventually abandoned, but the site remains open and readable rather than reconstructed. Excavations continue, and large areas are accessible, giving a clear sense of how a Cretan city actually functioned.

Aptera sits above Souda Bay, around 15 km east of Chania. Visiting by car is the practical option: a paved road leads to the entrance, with space to park nearby. There’s no direct public transport to the site itself. Buses run to nearby villages, but you’ll still need a walk or taxi for the final stretch.
