Derfor skal du bo nær Mindbender
Mindbender was a steel, triple-loop indoor roller coaster inside Galaxyland at West Edmonton Mall. It opened in 1985 and, at 44.2 metres tall, was long billed as the world’s tallest indoor roller coaster. For decades it was the mall’s headline thrill ride and a reference point for Edmonton itself. The key thing to know now is that Mindbender is permanently closed: it was decommissioned on January 30, 2023 and has since been removed. People still search for it because of its long run and reputation, and because they’re often booking hotels near where the ride used to be inside West Edmonton Mall.
Om Mindbender
Mindbender opened on December 20, 1985, designed by Werner Stengel and built by Anton Schwarzkopf at a reported cost of CAD $6 million. The coaster ran entirely indoors through Galaxyland, looping through the open interior of West Edmonton Mall. It featured three vertical loops, a top speed of about 60 mph (97 km/h), and forces reaching around 5.2 Gs.
In June 1986, a derailment killed three riders, leading to a year-long closure and major safety modifications before the ride reopened. Despite that history, Mindbender operated for more than 35 years and became closely tied to the identity of both Galaxyland and the mall itself. Its permanent closure in January 2023 marked the end of that era. The coaster has since been removed, and Galaxyland has confirmed the space is being redeveloped for new attractions. Today, there is no preserved section or public exhibit related to the ride.
