1. Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay before arrival if you can. Hainan’s government says mobile payment is widely available in ride-hailing, public transport, shared bikes, restaurants, supermarkets, hotels and scenic spots.
2. If you qualify for Hainan’s visa-free scheme, remember that it is Hainan-specific. Ordinary passport holders from 59 countries, including the United States, may stay within Hainan for up to 30 days for eligible purposes, but not for work or study.
3. Do Qilou Old Street late afternoon into dinner rather than at noon. The architecture photographs better in softer light, and the area’s food, snack and dessert scene is part of the reason to go.
4. Don’t assume the airport train is door-to-door downtown. It gets you quickly to Haikou East and other rail stops, but Qilou Old Street, West Coast hotels and Haidian Island usually still need a taxi, bus or ride-hail connection.
5. For beach days, choose Holiday Beach for facilities and BBQ atmosphere, but choose Dongzhai Harbor or the volcano park for a day that feels more specific to northern Hainan.
