Why stay near Al Fahidi Fort
Al Fahidi Fort stands on the south side of Dubai Creek in Bur Dubai and houses the Dubai Museum, the city’s main history museum. Built in 1787, it’s widely cited as the oldest surviving building in Dubai. People visit to understand what life looked like here before oil, through pearl diving, creek trade, and desert living, all shown inside the original defensive fort that once protected the settlement. Rather than focusing on art or spectacle, the museum uses the fort itself to explain how Dubai functioned day to day, making the setting as important as the displays.
About Al Fahidi Fort
Al Fahidi Fort was constructed in 1787 as a defensive structure to guard Dubai from attack. Over time it served multiple roles, including a garrison, royal residence, armoury, and even a prison. In 1971, the same year the United Arab Emirates was formed, the fort was converted into the Dubai Museum to preserve and present local heritage. The building is made from coral rock and gypsum, with thick walls, watchtowers, and a central courtyard that reflect traditional Gulf construction methods. Inside, the museum focuses on everyday life before modern development. You move from the open courtyard, where traditional boats and cannons are displayed, into underground galleries reached by a ramp. These galleries feature life-size dioramas of pearl divers, souks, workshops, Bedouin tents, and mosques, alongside displays on desert and marine life and archaeological finds from across the UAE dating back thousands of years.
