Why stay near Liberty London
Liberty London is a long‑running department store in London’s West End, just off Regent Street between Soho and Carnaby Street. People come partly to shop, but just as often to walk through the building itself. The store is best known for its mock‑Tudor structure and for developing the floral Liberty print fabrics still used by fashion houses today. Entry is free, and you’re welcome to wander the creaking staircases and small rooms even if you don’t buy anything. What sets Liberty apart is the building: a 1920s interior of heavy oak beams and atriums built using timber from decommissioned Royal Navy ships.

About Liberty London
Liberty was founded in 1875 by Arthur Lasenby Liberty, originally specialising in imported decorative goods and textiles from East Asia. As the business expanded, it outgrew several Regent Street locations and commissioned a purpose‑built flagship on Great Marlborough Street. The current building opened in 1924, designed by architects Edwin T. Hall and Edwin S. Hall during a Tudor‑revival period in British architecture. More than 24,000 cubic feet of timber from HMS Impregnable and HMS Hindustan were reused in its structure and floors. Today, the interior is arranged around central atriums with original staircases, carved wooden details, and memorial elements integrated into the design. Across multiple levels you’ll find fashion, beauty, homewares, and a dedicated Liberty Fabrics department. In 1972, the building received Grade II* listing, recognising its national architectural importance.
Best time to visit
Weekday mornings, particularly before noon, are the calmest time to explore the building and photograph the interior. Weekends and late afternoons are busier due to Regent Street foot traffic. December is the most crowded period of the year, when Christmas displays and a seasonal department draw heavy crowds, especially from late November onward.
Getting there
Liberty London’s main entrance is on Great Marlborough Street, just off Regent Street. Oxford Circus Underground station (Bakerloo, Central, Victoria lines) is about a five‑minute walk, while Piccadilly Circus (Piccadilly and Bakerloo lines) is around seven minutes away. Driving isn’t practical: there’s no on‑site parking and nearby streets have heavy restrictions.
Things worth knowing
You don’t need to buy anything to explore the building; browsing is welcome throughout the store.
On Sundays, browsing is allowed from 11:30, but purchases only start at 12:00.
Expect lots of stairs and split levels; lifts are available but can be slow at busy times.
December crowds are intense, so visit early in the day if you want space to move.
Restrooms and customer services are on upper floors, not near the main entrance.
Staying close to Liberty London works well if shopping, theatre, and walking are priorities. Soho puts you within minutes on foot and suits guests wanting dining and nightlife nearby, though evenings can be lively and hotels pricier. Mayfair, just west of Regent Street, is quieter and polished, but generally more expensive. Covent Garden offers a wider range of hotel prices and a strong food and theatre scene, trading a slightly longer walk for good Tube connections.
