Why stay near History Fort Lauderdale
History Fort Lauderdale is a compact museum campus along the New River in downtown Fort Lauderdale, focused on how the city and Broward County actually took shape. People come to understand local history beyond beaches and canals, from Seminole culture and early settlement to railroads, yachting, fashion, and modern growth. The most distinctive thing here is that the museums aren’t replicas or purpose-built galleries: you’re walking through real historic buildings. The centerpiece is the 1905 New River Inn, the oldest surviving hotel in Broward County, with additional historic structures clustered nearby, all easy to explore on foot.
About History Fort Lauderdale
History Fort Lauderdale traces its roots to 1962, when it was founded by local pioneer families as the Fort Lauderdale Historical Society. Today, the organization operates three museums and a research library along the New River, within the city’s downtown Arts & Entertainment District. The main History Museum is housed inside the 1905 New River Inn. Inside, you’ll find rotating art exhibitions on the first floor and permanent galleries upstairs covering Seminole culture, archaeology, maritime and yachting history, early aviation, wartime Fort Lauderdale, and Great Gatsby–era fashion. Nearby, the Pioneer House Museum is interpreted to 1907 with period furnishings, while the 1899 Replica Schoolhouse Museum recreates an early classroom with wooden desks and McGuffey readers. Together, these buildings form the largest remaining collection of historic structures on the New River, offering a clear, place-based look at how Fort Lauderdale developed.
