New York hotels like a local.

Midtown Manhattan offers easy access to Times Square, Broadway, and Central Park. Lower Manhattan suits business travelers near Wall Street. SoHo and Greenwich Village have boutique charm. Upper West Side is great for families near museums. Brooklyn (Williamsburg, DUMBO) offers trendier, often cheaper alternatives with Manhattan skyline views.

New York is one of America's most expensive hotel markets, and rates swing hard with the calendar: they peak in December, again in September and October, and during major events such as UN General Assembly week. Brooklyn and outer-borough stays are usually cheaper than Midtown. We do not quote fixed nightly price bands here, because we have no sourced figure behind them. April to June and September to November offer ideal weather. Spring brings cherry blossoms in Central Park. Fall has stunning foliage and cultural season kickoffs. Summer is hot and humid but offers free outdoor events. Winter is cold but magical during holidays—expect higher prices and crowds in December.

From JFK, the AirTrain connects to the subway at Jamaica or Howard Beach, and the whole trip to midtown takes roughly an hour to an hour and a quarter; yellow cabs from JFK to Manhattan run on a flat fare plus tolls and tip. From Newark, the AirTrain connects to NJ Transit into Penn Station in about 45 minutes to an hour. From LaGuardia, buses connect to the subway. Uber and Lyft serve all three. Current fares are on the MTA, Port Authority and NJ Transit sites — the taxi flat fare is posted at the JFK taxi stand — and we do not quote fares we cannot source.

Tipping is expected in New York, and more widely than in most of Europe: porters who carry bags, housekeeping, a concierge who arranges something for you, a doorman who finds you a cab, room service and valet parking are all customarily tipped. The amounts are a matter of local convention rather than a published tariff, so we do not print a table here. Room-service and restaurant bills sometimes already include a service charge — check before adding a second one.
