Why stay near връх ГОЛЯМ РЕЗЕН 2277 м
Голям Резен is the second-highest peak in Vitosha Mountain, rising to 2,277 meters just outside Sofia. It sits on the high plateau east of Cherni Vrah, close enough to the capital that you can reach the trailhead and be hiking within an hour. People come for a quieter alternative to the busiest summit in Vitosha: wide, open terrain, long views over Sofia and the Bistritsa valley, and a sense of space that’s rare so close to a major city. The most distinctive feature is the broad summit ridge with visible air-traffic radar installations near the top, a landmark you can often spot from Sofia on clear days.
About връх ГОЛЯМ РЕЗЕН 2277 м
Голям Резен lies within Vitosha Nature Park, a protected area established in 1934 and recognized as the oldest nature park in the Balkans. Unlike peaks marked by monuments or historic buildings, Golям Резен’s importance comes from its geography and conservation status. The mountain forms part of the main watershed divide between river systems flowing toward the Black Sea and the Aegean Sea. On its lower slopes is Bistrishko Branishte, a UNESCO biosphere reserve safeguarding old-growth spruce forests and sub-alpine meadows. On the ground, the experience is defined by an exposed alpine environment: windswept grasslands, rocky eastern faces used by climbers, and a web of marked hiking routes connecting Aleko, Cherni Vrah, and the Rezni peaks. The summit area itself is open, with the radar installations reminding you that this high ground still has an active role today.
