You come to Chefchaouen for its compact blue medina, mountain setting and slower pace. The town sits in the Tangier–Tétouan–Al Hoceima region at the foot of the Kelaa and Meggou mountains, and was founded by Sharif Ali ibn Rachid Al-Alami between 1471 and 1480. Stay inside the old town if you want atmosphere, roof terraces and early-morning lanes; stay near the new-town edge if you want easier taxi access and fewer stairs.
