Perché dormire vicino a Cippico Castle
Cippico Castle, also called Kaštel Cippico, is a small Renaissance-era fortress in Kaštel Novi, one of the Kaštela towns between Split and Trogir. People come here less for a museum visit and more to understand how this stretch of coast was fortified in the 1500s. The most distinctive thing is its role as the nucleus of a planned fortified settlement, not a standalone castle. If you’re walking the Kaštela seafront or driving between Split and Trogir, it’s an easy, meaningful stop that adds historical context to the coastline you’re moving through.
Che cos'è Cippico Castle
Cippico Castle was built in 1512 by Pavao Antun Cippico, a nobleman from Trogir, during a period when Ottoman threats shaped daily life along the Dalmatian coast. It was designed as a fortified summer residence, with sloping ground-floor walls intended to improve defense. Rather than standing alone, the structure formed the core of a planned village for agricultural workers. That settlement later developed into today’s Kaštel Novi.
The castle is part of a broader Venetian-era system of fortifications created by the Cippico family along Kaštela Bay, linking Split and Trogir. This chain of castles and towers explains the linear layout of the Kaštela towns you see today. The building has been restored but remains modest in scale. It now functions mainly as a venue for local cultural events and exhibitions, not as a conventional museum. Most visitors experience it as part of a walk through the historic center of Kaštel Novi.
