Wanzhou District sits in northeast Chongqing on the upper Yangtze, within the Three Gorges Reservoir area and about 228 km from central Chongqing. You come here for a more local Chongqing experience: riverfront promenades, resettlement-era museums, older market streets, forested hills and a food identity built around Wanzhou grilled fish. It is practical rather than polished, so base yourself carefully and expect taxis, buses and Chinese-language apps to do much of the work.

- Choose your base by purpose: Gaosuntang and Wanda for convenience, Chenjiaba for museums and river walks, Wuqiao for early flights, and Zhoujiaba or Tianshengcheng for rail access and food-street evenings.
- Give Wanzhou Waterfall a dedicated half-day, as it is in Ganning Town and has several in-park features.
- Visit the Three Gorges Migrants Memorial Hall before the Pinghu riverfront if you want the reservoir surroundings to feel less abstract.
- Order grilled fish with other people if possible, then add local dishes such as gege steamed meat, Cheng cold noodles, radish oil cakes or Xiaotaoyuan soup dumplings.
