Cotai didn’t exist as land until the mid-2000s, when Macau completed a 5.2-square-kilometre reclamation in Seac Pai Bay, physically joining Taipa and Coloane. The name “Cotai” combines Coloane and Taipa. After Macau liberalised its casino industry in 2002, the government earmarked Cotai as the main expansion zone for large-scale resorts, since space on the Macau Peninsula was limited. The first casino-hotel opened in 2006, but Cotai’s direction changed with the opening of The Venetian Macao in August 2007, which set the template for mega integrated resorts. Today, Cotai concentrates most of Macau’s largest resorts and a significant share of its tourism activity. What visitors actually experience is mostly indoors: vast hotel lobbies, shopping streets, theatres, dining zones, and gaming floors, with multiple resorts linked by roads, walkways, and Light Rapid Transit stations.

Most visitors arrive via Macau International Airport in Taipa, a short drive from Cotai. From the airport, resort shuttle buses, taxis, and the Macau Light Rapid Transit serve Cotai directly.
