Waarom je vlak bij MAS Museum aan de Stroom slaapt
MAS – Museum aan de Stroom sits on Antwerp’s old harbour docks in the Het Eilandje district, right along the Scheldt. Opened in May 2011, it’s the city’s largest museum and was built to explain how Antwerp grew through trade, shipping, and global connections. People come for the exhibitions, but also for the building itself. A public spiral walkway runs around the exterior, climbing floor by floor to a rooftop panorama with wide views over the port, river, and historic centre. That outdoor route is free, which means you can experience MAS even if you don’t plan to enter the galleries.
Over MAS Museum aan de Stroom
MAS was created to bring together several older Antwerp museum collections in a single, modern building and to reconnect the city with its waterfront after decades of industrial use. The museum’s focus is Antwerp’s relationship with the world: shipping, migration, power, belief, food culture, and daily life shaped by the river and the port. Inside, exhibitions combine historic objects with contemporary interpretation rather than presenting a simple timeline. The collection includes around 600,000 objects, displayed across permanent thematic galleries and rotating temporary exhibitions that change several times a year. Even without a gallery ticket, MAS functions as a public space: the exterior walkway and rooftop panorama are designed as an open route through the harbour area, making the building part museum, part urban lookout.
