If you’re searching for “Square Tower” in Ipoh, you’re almost certainly looking for the Birch Memorial Clock Tower. There’s no attraction by the Square Tower name in Ipoh; that tower is actually in Kuching, Sarawak. In Ipoh, this freestanding clock tower sits on the edge of Ipoh Padang, directly opposite the railway station. People come because it’s one of the clearest snapshots of the city’s colonial era and an easy stop on an Old Town walk. The most distinctive thing here is that it’s entirely outdoors: no gates, no tickets, no interior—just a public monument you take in from the square and surrounding sidewalks.
О месте — Square Tower
The Birch Memorial Clock Tower was unveiled on 8 December 1909 and funded by the British colonial administration at a cost of $25,000 Straits dollars. It commemorates James W. W. Birch, the first British Resident of Perak, who was assassinated in 1875—an event that influenced early British rule in the state.
At ground level, you’ll see four sculpted panels illustrating stages of human civilization, produced by Doulton & Co. of London. Around them stand four statues symbolising prudence, justice, fortitude, and temperance. The original clock mechanism included a main bell and four chime bells supplied by Gillet & Johnson of Croydon.
The tower stands beside Ipoh Padang, the former civic field for parades and public events, with clear sightlines to the Town Hall, State Mosque, and Ipoh Railway Station. Most people experience it as a short, informative pause on the Ipoh Heritage Trail rather than a standalone visit.
