Warum du in der Nähe von CFB Downsview übernachten solltest
CFB Downsview, formally Canadian Forces Base Toronto, isn’t an active base anymore. Today, its former airfield is Downsview Park, a 291‑acre public green space in North York. People come for long walking and cycling paths, big festivals like VELD Music Festival, and the unusual sense of openness you don’t often get inside Toronto. The most distinctive thing is what’s under your feet: this was once one of Canada’s key military aviation sites, and the park still follows the lines of old runways, hangars, and service roads.
Über CFB Downsview
Downsview’s aviation history starts in 1929, when de Havilland Aircraft of Canada built a manufacturing plant and airfield here. During and after the Second World War, the federal government assembled surrounding land and established RCAF Station Downsview as a front‑line air base for southern Ontario. In 1968, following the unification of Canada’s armed forces, it became Canadian Forces Base Toronto (Downsview). Military operations gradually declined, and the base officially closed on April 1, 1996.
Rather than selling the land off entirely, the federal government committed to keeping most of it as urban recreational space. That decision led to Downsview Park, now managed by Canada Lands Company. Walking the park today, you see open fields laid over former runways, repurposed hangars like the Hangar Sport & Events Centre, and aviation‑themed playgrounds and public art. It’s not a preserved base you tour — it’s a working city park built directly on top of military aviation infrastructure.
