Warum du in der Nähe von Bačvice Beach übernachten solltest
Bačvice Beach is Split’s main city beach and one of the rare sandy stretches along the Dalmatian coast. It sits just east of the Old Town, right by the ferry port, which makes it unusually easy to reach on foot. What sets it apart is the water: it stays shallow far from shore, so you can wade out knee‑deep and still be close to the beach. Locals use that shallow shelf to play picigin, a ball game that’s part of daily life here. Travellers come for easy swimming, a social scene, and the fact that you can pair a beach swim with Old Town sightseeing in the same morning.
Über Bačvice Beach
Bačvice has been tied to everyday life in Split for well over a century. A wooden bathing pier was built here in 1891, marking it as one of the earliest organized bathing areas in the region. On May 18, 1919, the City of Split officially declared Bačvice the municipal beach, formalizing its role as a public gathering place. The beach is best known as the birthplace of picigin, a shallow‑water ball game invented in the early 20th century and now listed as intangible cultural heritage of Croatia. What you see today is a small, sheltered sandy bay with a long, gently sloping seabed, free public showers, changing areas, and seasonal sunbed rentals. In summer, beach bars line the promenade, and the area shifts toward nightlife in the evening. At peak capacity, Bačvice can hold more than 10,000 people, which explains both its energy and its crowds.
