Warum du in der Nähe von Opéra de Nice übernachten solltest
Opéra de Nice — officially Opéra Nice Côte d’Azur — is Nice’s main opera house, sitting right at the edge of Vieux Nice along the Quai des États-Unis. It’s a working 19th‑century Italian‑style theatre where people come in the evening for opera, ballet, and orchestral concerts rather than daytime sightseeing. The most distinctive thing once you’re inside is the horseshoe‑shaped auditorium, with stacked box seating and a painted ceiling designed for acoustics and clear sightlines. If you’ve seen it listed with Monaco, note that the opera is firmly in Nice, France, and staying in central Nice is far more practical for attending performances.
Über Opéra de Nice
The current Opéra de Nice opened on 7 February 1885, replacing an earlier theatre that was destroyed by fire in 1881. It was designed by François Aune, a student of Charles Garnier of Paris Opéra fame, and follows the Italian opera house tradition: compact, vertically layered, and focused on sound and visibility rather than grand scale. The site itself has hosted theatres since 1776, when a first wooden playhouse stood here under Sardinian rule.
Inside, the auditorium holds just over 1,000 seats across three levels of boxes, creating a relatively intimate feel for major repertoire. The painted ceiling is by Emmanuel Costa, and the overall layout keeps performers close to the audience. Listed as a Monument Historique since 1992, the building is home to the Orchestre Philharmonique de Nice, Ballet Nice Méditerranée, and the opera chorus, making it a central part of the city’s cultural life rather than a preserved relic.
