Warum du in der Nähe von Avis Dam übernachten solltest
Avis Dam is a small urban nature reserve on Windhoek’s eastern edge, about 10 km from the city centre, built around a reservoir originally designed for municipal water supply. Today it’s used far more by locals than tour groups: early‑morning walks, trail runs, dog walks, mountain biking, and year‑round birding. What sets it apart isn’t the dam wall, but how quickly you leave the city behind and find yourself in open thornveld and rocky hills. When there’s water, a circular trail loops the reservoir; when it’s dry, the landscape and wildlife still carry the experience. It’s practical, low‑key, and very much part of everyday Windhoek.
Über Avis Dam
Avis Dam was built in 1933 by the South African colonial administration to supply drinking water to Windhoek, with the first flooding recorded the following year. The surrounding land, roughly 300 hectares, was declared a park in 1939, long before residential suburbs expanded eastward around it. As Windhoek’s water infrastructure developed, the dam lost its primary role as a reservoir and gradually shifted toward conservation and recreation.
Since 1997, the City of Windhoek has leased the area to Greenspace, a local non‑profit that manages access, trails, and security. Prolonged drought in the mid‑2010s left the lakebed dry for several years, and water levels still fluctuate significantly with rainfall. What you see today is a network of walking and cycling trails, including a signed circular route of about 5 km, cutting through thornveld, grassland, and rocky hills north of the floodplain. Birdlife draws regular visitors, with waterbirds appearing when levels allow and arid‑zone species present year‑round. Facilities are minimal: no cafés, visitor centre, or formal viewpoints.
