Why stay near Asakusa Culture Tourist Information Center
The Asakusa Culture Tourist Information Center is Taitō City’s main visitor hub for Asakusa, set directly opposite Kaminarimon Gate, the entrance to Sensō‑ji. Opened in April 2012, it combines practical travel help with one standout feature: a free observation terrace on the 8th floor. From there, you look straight down Nakamise Street toward the temple precincts, with Tokyo Skytree visible beyond. Many people pop in for maps or restrooms, but end up staying for the view, which costs nothing and stays open late.
About Asakusa Culture Tourist Information Center
Commissioned by Taitō City and designed by Kengo Kuma & Associates, the Asakusa Culture Tourist Information Center was completed in 2012 after a three‑year build. It occupies a compact 326 m² corner plot that once held a small bank, directly across from Kaminarimon. Kuma’s design stacks eight small volumes with sloped roofs, echoing traditional wooden townhouses while using modern steel, wood, and glass. Inside, you’ll find a multilingual tourist information counter, rotating exhibition and event spaces focused on local culture, conference rooms, a café, and the open‑air observation terrace. The building received the 2012 Good Design Award, underlining its dual role as everyday civic infrastructure and a contemporary architectural landmark. In practice, it works as both a planning stop and a place to pause during a busy Sensō‑ji visit.
